Gift Messages at Checkout: Delight Customers and Cut Support Tickets

Adding a gift message field to checkout takes five minutes and quietly solves one of the most common customer service headaches for eCommerce brands.

A surprising share of eCommerce orders are gifts. Research consistently puts the figure at 20–40% during peak season and 10–15% year-round. Yet most stores have no native way for customers to include a message with their order — so those customers email, call, or leave a review complaining about it.

The support ticket problem

When there's no gift message field at checkout, gift-givers do one of three things: they abandon the order, they find the store's email and send a separate message hoping someone will act on it before shipping, or they just don't send a message and the recipient has no idea who sent the gift. None of these are good outcomes.

What the Gift Message block does

The Gift Message block adds a simple text field to checkout. The customer's note is saved as an order attribute and appears directly in Shopify Admin alongside the order. Your fulfilment team sees it, includes it with the package, and the customer never has to contact support.

Optional gift wrapping upsell

Pair the gift message field with a checkbox upsell for gift wrapping. Customers who are clearly buying a gift are highly receptive to paying $3–$5 for wrapping — it adds revenue and further reduces the chance of a disappointing unboxing.

Operational notes

Brief your fulfilment team on where to find order attributes in Shopify Admin. If you use a third-party warehouse or 3PL, confirm that gift notes are passed through in your order export. The block works — but the process needs to be there to act on the data it captures.
