Building Trust at Checkout: Trust Badges That Actually Work
Not all trust signals are equal. We break down which badges reduce checkout abandonment and which ones customers have learned to ignore.
Checkout abandonment averages around 70% across eCommerce. A significant portion of that is anxiety — customers asking themselves 'Is this site safe? What if I need to return it? Can I trust this brand?' Trust badges answer those questions visually, at the exact moment they arise.
Badges that work
The most effective trust signals address specific fears: SSL Secure (is my card safe?), Free Returns or Money-Back Guarantee (what if it's wrong?), and social proof like star ratings or review counts (do other people trust this brand?). These speak directly to the questions that cause abandonment.
Badges that don't work
Generic 'Safe Checkout' badges with no recognisable logo or backing have little effect — customers have seen too many of them on low-quality sites. Badges work because of the trust transferred from the badge issuer (Visa, Mastercard, BBB, Trustpilot) to your store.
Placement matters
Show trust badges close to the payment section, not at the top of the checkout. The anxiety is highest right before a customer enters their card details — that's where the reassurance needs to be.
Keep it concise
Three to four badges is enough. More than that starts to look desperate and clutters the checkout. Pick the two or three fears most relevant to your product and address those specifically.
